If you have dental implants, you’re probably used to the idea that you shouldn’t feel any type of sensitivity in your teeth. That’s because though they look and behave just like the real thing, your restorations are prosthetic, and unable to experience sensations. But what happens when it seems like they do?

If you notice any kind of pain or discomfort surrounding your dental implants, here’s what could be responsible, and what you should do to protect yourself.

Causes of Dental Implant Sensitivity

There are several problems that patients experience that could be responsible for dental implant sensitivity. These issues include:

  • Gum infection/ peri-implantitis: Not only is gum disease still a possibility with dental implants, so is a condition called peri-implantitis, which is caused by infection of the gum tissue surrounding the post. It typically occurs when patients don’t brush and floss properly, and if left untreated can cause implant failure.
  • Impaction: food or debris may become stuck between your teeth or under your dental implants, which can cause pain that feels like it’s originating from the implant itself. If you find this happening and cannot free the matter on your own, call your dentist for assistance.
  • Crowding: Occasionally, dental implants may be installed too close to each other or your remaining teeth. This pressure can cause discomfort and sensitivity and may require revision by your dentist.
  • Tissue or nerve damage: This type of damage can happen during the implantation process, but it usually heals. In some cases, however, it can be permanent.
  • Allergic reaction: Though rare, some patients may be allergic to the titanium implant or to the cement your dentist uses to hold the crown to it. If you are experiencing an allergic reaction, your dentist may need to remove the implant or some of the cement.

What To Do if You Notice Dental Implant Sensitivity

If you experience any feelings of sensitivity in your dental implants or the surrounding areas, contact your dentist at once to prevent serious complications like implant failure. Additional warning signs may include:

  • Inflamed, tender gums
  • Gum recession
  • Pain or difficulty chewing
  • Obvious sensitivity or discomfort
  • Swollen gums
  • Loose implants

While there’s no guarantee that your dentist will be able to save your failing dental implant, there are still some procedures that may help, including bone grafting, gum disease treatment, or another solution.

Remember, if you notice any sensitivity in your dental implants, contact your dentist as soon as possible for an urgent appointment. It could save your smile!
